It is extracted from the thyroid gland of healthy bovine, sheep and porcine. It is not soluble in common organic solvents, such as water, ethanol and etc. It is soluble in ethanol which contains inorganic acid or alkaline and in alkali hydroxide and carbonated alkali solutions. Adding sodium nitrite in its acidic ethanol solution and heating them, it shows the color of yellow, and then adding an excess of aqueous ammonia, it becomes pink. Thyroxine is T4, four triiodothyronine.
