Fucoxanthin is a natural pigment contained in microalgae such as wakame, algae, kelp, and sargassum, or microalgae such as diatoms, algae, and yellow-green algae,a carotenoid in algae, an oxygen-containing derivative of carotenoids, namely lutein.

Fucoxanthin is insoluble in water and easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. It is generally a fat-soluble powder or oil. The color is orange-yellow, orange-red to reddish-brown with purity from low to high.

Fucoxanthin has molecular formula of C42H58O6, molecular weight of 658.906, density of 1.09, and melting point of 166-169 °C.
