Ascorbyl glucoside, generally known as 2-O-a-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid, is a relatively novel compound and is a stable vitamin C derivative. Over a long period of time, it gradually is converted into ascorbic acid.
Ascorbyl glucoside is derived from L-ascorbic acid and α-glucosyl donor saccharide, in the presence of α-isomaltosylglucosaccharide producing enzyme. When cream and lotion containing this remarkable substance are applied in skin, Ascorbyl glucoside is hydrolyzed by glucosidase, an enzyme presenting in the membrane of skin cells. This process releases vitamin C in its natural active form. When vitamin C enters cells it results in significant well-documented biological responses. It has been demonstrated to be hydrolyzed over a prolonged period giving its beneficial physiological effects to the cells and tissues in a constant and sustained manner.
The ingredient has been shown in studies to support the skin’s healthy production of melanin, which has the potential to reduce dark spots – especially those that pop up as a result of photo-aging caused by exposure to pollutants and UV rays - resulting in a more even skin tone.
It also helps support the healthy function of collagen, one of the main skin proteins that determines skin’s elasticity and strength. With more collagen, skin is less likely to experience fine lines and wrinkles, and will appear tighter with more elasticity.
